Every New day brings the possibility and challenge of new beginnings.  However, before embarking on such new beginnings it is important that we pause and reflect on the successes of our past as the key to building a stronger future.

On December 31, 2001, Dr. James H. Stiltner retired as Executive Director of the Commission on Secondary and Middle Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  Dr. Stiltner served the Commission and Association for the past 25 years with distinction and honor.  In Latin America, he championed the schools' efforts to achieve accreditation and provide children with a quality education.  His contributions to the work of the Commission and Association have resulted in many improvements that will be the basis for future growth.  The hallmark of his leadership was defined by his loyalty and integrity to all people that were associated with the work of the Commission and Association.  He will be missed as a person and leader, but his work will long be remembered as significant contributions to the rich tradition and history of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

As I begin my new role as executive director, I would like to express my profound appreciation for having had the opportunity for the past seven years to serve under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Stiltner.  His grace and style of leadership provided me with the richest professional experience of my career.  Additionally, it is indeed an honor and privilege to follow in Dr. Stiltner's footsteps and serve as the next executive director of the Commission.  I am deeply committed and prepared to execute the duties of the position and fulfill the confidence and support which the Executive Council and Board of Trustees have extended me.  Additionally, I look forward to working with the professional staff, Commission members, and the teachers and administrators of the member schools throughout the eleven southern states and Latin America in the pursuit of improving schools and their capacity to support and enhance student success.  In pursuit of our ideals and visions as educators, together we can and will make a difference.

Mark A. Elgart, Ed.D.
